"14th of September - Commemorative Day Open to All Mourners"
The picturesque town of Vilsbiburg, nestled in the Landshut district of Bavaria, is set to open its doors to the public on the Day of Open Heritage. This significant cultural event, organised by the German Foundation for Monument Protection since 1993, promises a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of the region.
One of the highlights of the day will be the visit to the protected Historic Center of Haunzenbergersöll, a charming ensemble of two 18th-century houses. Guided tours through this old town are available, with registration at [email protected].
The estate at Faerberanger, Vilsbiburg, another historical gem, can be reached via the LAVV line 1, stop "Alte Ziegelei". Free admission and parking spaces are available at the large Faerberanger parking lot. A comprehensive archaeological excavation is currently underway at this site, revealing traces of 800 years of Vilsbiburg's history, including a late medieval city wall.
Individual access to the estate is not possible, but visitors can enjoy a tour at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, starting at the Kugelhalle, with registration required. On this special day, the public can also visit the excavation site from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with tours offered at 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM.
At the excavation site, the Lower Heritage Protection Authority of the Landshut district will present an exhibition of heritage protection projects in the area of Vilsbiburg old town. The local history association Vilsbiburg will also share their research findings, particularly on nutrition in medieval Vilsbiburg.
Coffee and cake will be served by the local history association at the excavation site, adding a touch of warmth to the historical exploration. The town of Vilsburg will also present plans for the development of the Faerberanger area at the excavation site.
The estate, built in the 1960s, was a residence and studio until the death of King. Extensive renovation work was carried out in 2024, preparing it for its next chapter. Efforts to reuse the estate have been underway since 2023, with the goal of transforming it into a studio house once again.
The Artist's House Ganslberg, located at Ganslberg 24, Altdorf, is also part of the Day of Open Heritage event, but no further details are provided in this paragraph.
In addition to these historical sites, the village festival will take place in the protected ensemble of Haunzenbergersöll, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the local history and gardening association. A temporary exhibition was held in the summer of 2025 at the estate, and a picture/video loop can be found in the "AFRIKAHALLE" - Ganslberg as a Bergeraum.
For those arriving by car, parking is available at Rottenburger Street 24 in 84032 Altdorf. A shuttle service is offered for a fee and upon prior registration, making the journey to these historical sites even more convenient.
Join us on the Day of Open Heritage and embark on a journey through time, exploring the rich heritage of the Landshut district.
