A Coastal Residence in Cornwall Mirroring the Ebb and Flow of the Local Landscape
A Minimalist Surf Retreat Embraces the Cornish Landscape
Nestled on the northeastern coast of Cornwall, a unique surf retreat has been designed to harmoniously blend with its surroundings. The Cornwall Retreat, a project by London-based architecture and interior design studio De Rosee Sa, offers a space tailored for easy living and personalized to serve the owners' passion for surfing.
The retreat, clad in timber and featuring simple geometries and minimalist lines, spans 335 square metres. Its design preserves the village scale while providing the family with the necessary space. The house, with its dark-framed openings that punctuate the facades, boasts a front door that is plain, allowing the sea view to take centre stage.
Upon entering, one is greeted by the interior's neutral colours and materials, such as clay and lime paints, wide oak boards, and timber-lined ceilings. Surfaces in the interior are tactile and textures echo sand, stone, and driftwood, creating a breathable environment that draws on its surroundings.
The main living space, illuminated by vaulted timber ceilings and rooflights, offers a large picture window for long sea views. A sculptural limestone fireplace serves as the room's focal point. For added convenience, the retreat provides space for changing and storage before and after surfing sessions.
A garden made of wildflowers, grasses, and Cornish stone surrounds the house, creating a naturalistic landscape that seamlessly connects the retreat with its setting. The garden also houses a bespoke bunk room, perfect for accommodating guests or surfing buddies.
One of the retreat's standout features is the cocoon-like snug, a cosy nook designed for relaxation after a day spent in the sea. The design aims to connect deeply with its setting, using materials that draw on its surroundings and incorporating local architectural elements like a gabled roof.
Max de Rosee, co-founder of De Rosee Sa, emphasizes celebrating the dramatic Cornish landscape. The minimalist Cornwall Retreat is more than just a surf retreat; it's a testament to the beauty and power of the Cornish coast.
