Activities Galore for Your Summer Adventure List: 150 Ideas to Keep You Occupied This Season

The summer months are a great time for kids and families to enjoy a break from the routine of school and engage in a variety of fun and educational activities. Occupational therapist Colleen Beck, OTR/L, has compiled a comprehensive list of 104 therapist-approved activities that are not only entertaining but also help children develop motor skills, gain stronger bodies, and promote executive functioning skills.

The activities are divided into six categories: outdoor activities, indoor activities, water activities, games, creative "maker" activities, and imagination activities. Some examples of activities included in the list are obstacle courses, nature walks, kick a ball, animal walks, balloon toss, and hide and seek.

Creative activities on the list include painting, making a song, finger painting, making a fort, coffee filter butterfly, paper bag puppets, paint rocks, making play dough, baking cookies, and building with LEGO. Life skills tasks on the list include refilling a water bottle throughout the day, cleaning their room weekly, loading and unloading the dishwasher, making a simple meal plan for a week, following a recipe, planning a backyard scavenger hunt, keeping a daily hydration log, tracking their own screen time or reading minutes, watering plants on a schedule, and making a summer calendar with events and activities.

Imagination activities on the list include imagining you were whatever you could do or be, how can you get to that point? Make a list of the steps, imagining you had $1,000. What would you do?, imagining all the things you are grateful for, pretending to be something or someone else, making up a play, making up a dance, acting out a story, and thinking of a new ending to a movie.

The Summer OT Bundle, designed by Colleen Beck, is a resource that includes these activities, guides, and products to help kids gain motor skills, handwriting, hand strength, fine motor skills, puzzles, scissor skills, and function in fun and engaging ways. The Bundle is designed to fill home programs, extended year programs, summer camps, or to have the babysitter do with the kids. It is also suitable for therapists who want to work on skills kids need to develop without having to reinvent the wheel.

The activities in the Summer OT Bundle are low-budget and can be done using items found around the house. The list can help combat summer boredom and promote active play for kids. It can also be used as a home program or a daily chore checklist.
