Altai region mushrooms yield unexpected bounty of worm oil and seeds
In the picturesque Altai region of Russia, foragers are facing an unusual challenge this year - a scarcity of mushrooms. The main catch towards the end of summer has been the chanterelle, with abundant numbers in the Talmenka and Troitsk districts, especially after rain. However, other popular finds such as milk caps, boletes, and birch boletes have been scarce, according to the subscriber of the group "Mushrooms and Mushroom Pickers of the Altai Region."
One subscriber shared that they managed to collect more than 20 white mushrooms, though not all at once, this year. Yet, this is a rare find compared to previous years. The hope among the foragers is that the situation will improve and the harvest will be more diverse in August.
Despite the scarcity of other mushrooms, the current year is reportedly the worst for mushroom foraging in the Altai region in seven years. Even poisonous mushrooms seem to have stopped growing, a welcome yet unexpected reprieve.
The unusual finding in the baskets of the Altai foragers is the blue stem mushroom, a mushroom with a distinctive mushroom-like smell.
