Ancient and contemporary narratives intertwine, as Hưng Yên crafts tales of tradition and innovation
The Nam Cao Linen Weaving Cooperative, located in the historic village with a near 400-year-old tradition, made a significant impact at the recent exhibition held to celebrate the country's 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2.
The event showcased the intricate production process of the linen products, with traditional wooden looms heard throughout, creating a culturally rich atmosphere. The shimmering and soft fabrics, a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans, captivated the audience.
The linen products from the cooperative, including handkerchiefs, traditional áo dài (dresses), blankets, and various handicrafts, received significant attention from visitors. This recognition not only generates economic value but also contributes to promoting Vietnam's cultural image to the world.
The revival of the craft village began in 2016, under the management of Luông Thanh Hạnh, who took on the nearly nonexistent market and undervalued handcrafted products. Since then, the cooperative has expanded its market through the adoption of digital platforms, participation in trade fairs, and engagement in international trade.
Products from the cooperative are now exported to various countries including the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, South Korea, and India. In 2023, the Nam Cao linen weaving village was recognised as national intangible cultural heritage.
Artisan Hoàng Thị Hương expressed her joy at the revival of the craft village, stating that Nam Cao linen has its own brand and value. The activities of the cooperative serve as a foundation for preserving the unique artisanal values of their ancestors and passing down techniques to the younger generation.
Members of younger generations attended the exhibition to promote the effort to revive traditional crafts from their hometown. They inherit the essence of their ancestors and proactively embrace technology and market trends to elevate traditional handicraft products.
Under Luông Thanh Hạnh's leadership, the Nam Cao Linen Weaving Cooperative has transformed itself, ensuring the preservation of this centuries-old tradition while adapting to the modern market. The cooperative continues to strive towards promoting and preserving Vietnam's rich cultural heritage.
