In the heart of Wurzen, a small town in Saxony, Germany, a unique exhibition is taking place. From October 16 to October 25, the Wurzen Carpet Shop on the market square transforms into a temporary exhibition space, showcasing a captivating collection of carpets in the 'WURZEN WEAVES ON' exhibition.
This exhibition, in cooperation with the Cultural-Historical Museum Wurzen with Ringelnatz Collection, offers a fascinating exploration of the boundaries between public and private spaces, as the carpets negotiate these boundaries in intriguing ways.
The Wurzen Carpet Shop, although not barrier-free, is steeped in my history. Founded in 1880, the factory closed its doors in 1996, but not before gaining international fame through worldwide exports at various world exhibitions. After its closure, the factory became a piece of local history.
The carpets on display reflect the tension between product design and ideological influences on home furnishings. They are at the intersection of everyday items, craft art, and industrial culture, offering a glimpse into the past while remaining relevant in the present.
The 'WURZEN WEAVES ON' exhibition also features a selection of Wurzen carpets from the museum's depot. These carpets, showcased in their new context, take on a new life, inviting visitors to contemplate their historical and cultural significance.
Photographs by Gerhard Weber and Cordia Schlegelmilch provide impressions of the transformation process that Wurzen underwent during the revolution. They also document the highly specialized work in the carpet factory, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship that went into creating these intricate pieces.
Katrin Hansen's photographs for the exhibition further enhance the visitor's experience, providing a contemporary perspective on the carpets and their place in the modern world.
The 'Exhibition Opening' for 'WURZEN WEAVES ON' is on October 15, at 5:00 PM. Each day during the exhibition, the opening hours will be from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Don't miss this opportunity to step into the past and appreciate the artistry and history of Wurzen carpets.
