At the Self-Help and Health Day held at the City Hospital Solingen, the significance of self-help groups in healthcare was brought to the forefront. These groups, which provide vital peer support, played a pivotal role in fostering mental health, emotional well-being, and resilience among healthcare workers.

One such group, Karden, headed by Nicole Backes, the head of geriatrics at the hospital, is making strides in helping seniors overcome their fear of modern technology. Karden, traditionally significant in the Turkish community for caring for older family members, has expanded its reach to include digital guidance for older people.

The Digital Guides, a part of Karden, help, explain, and support older people in using digital media. Their aim is to develop a training course to accommodate more people, bridging the digital divide and enhancing the quality of life for seniors.

Another self-help group, the Bergisch Land Histamine Group, was honoured with the Self-Help Award. This group, led by Barbara Bontemps until recently, has been supporting people with histamine intolerance for eleven years. With around 180 members, the group offers a reliable institution for those affected, providing valuable tips and a sense of community.

The Self-Help Award was presented to three self-help groups in total, including the Digital Guides of Solingen. The Turkish community has also embraced the concept of self-help groups, with Karden being one of the honourees. Unlike the German community, the use of German support services is not common or sometimes frowned upon in the Turkish community, making groups like Karden even more valuable.

Mayor Tim Kurzbach emphasised the enormous impact of self-help groups on the city, while Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Standl, the medical director of the City Hospital, underlined their importance in light of the growing economic pressure on hospitals and practices.

Self-help groups offer a space for employees to share experiences, challenges, and coping strategies, promoting empowerment, mutual respect, and better self-awareness among healthcare workers facing high stress and burnout. These groups provide practical and emotional support, helping staff gain fresh perspectives and authentic connections, which in turn benefits both individual well-being and organizational health outcomes.

Recognition through events like the Self-Help Award ceremony highlights the value of these groups in improving workplace well-being and patient care quality. This aligns with broader evidence supporting peer-based mental health interventions in healthcare, which demonstrate improvements in stress, anxiety, and burnout among staff.

In conclusion, self-help groups provide essential mental health support and emotional resilience for healthcare workers. They create a supportive community based on shared experience and mutual understanding, making them a valuable asset in healthcare settings.
