City-Dwellers, Count the Birds: Partake in the 'Hour of Garden Birds' in Berlin!
Berliners Encouraged to Participate in Bird Counting Event in Berlin - Berlin residents advocated for avian census
Greetings, fellow Berliners! The city may be bustling, but it's also teeming with avian life. The Peregrine falcon, a resident of Berlin's urban environment, and the vibrant orange-blue kingfisher are just two of the many bird species that call our city home.
Wondering what bird species you might spot and how many are residing in our metropolis? The Nature Conservation Union (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association (LBV) are eager to find out, and they need your help! From May 9th to 11th, as part of the 'Hour of Garden Birds' event, you're invited to join the bird-counting extravaganza.
For those interested in joining the city center count, the NABU recommends keeping an eye out for the common, yet charming goldfinch, with its red-hued face and striking yellow wing stripes. The lively redstart, with its tail bobbing while serenading, can often be found in the city's outskirts. Don't forget to tally common city birds like sparrows and pigeons during your observation hour!
Last year, a whopping 36,000 birds were counted in Berlin. Intrigued? Here's the scoop on how to join:
- Observe birds from a quiet location, whether in a garden, park, or from a window.
- Record the maximum number of each species spotted within an hour.
- Submit your results via the internet, app, or mail.
The nature conservation associations aim to gather insights into current bird population trends that supplement official data. Last year, around 1,980 individuals participated, contributing to the impressive bird count.
Join the local NABU groups for counting excursions during the weekend. The Lichtenberg district group is counting on May 11th at 9:00 AM in the Wartenberger field. On May 10th at 2:00 PM, bring your little pals to the Rummelsburger Bucht for a bird-watching event specially designed for children!
