Beware These Trees: Messy, Invasive, or Allergenic

Homeowners beware: several tree species can cause unwanted issues in your garden or neighbourhood. From messy fruits to invasive roots and allergens, these trees require careful consideration before planting.

Honeylocust trees, with their large thorns and copious, large fruits, can create a mess. Cottonwoods, a variety of poplar, produce fine white seeds that clog AC units, screens, and gutters, while also causing allergy issues. Black walnut trees produce a toxic compound that can kill nearby plants and have a strong aroma. Weeping willows, though elegant, are fragile and prone to dropping branches and canker diseases. Northern catalpa trees offer beautiful blooms but also produce long seed pods and messy caterpillars. Poplar root systems can grow into sewer lines and buckle sidewalks, while poplars themselves are susceptible to diseases and weak branches. Crabapple trees, while attractive, drop more fruits than other species, creating litter. Sweet gum trees produce hard, spiked gum balls that are difficult to rake and don't compost easily. Magnolia trees, with their large, waxy leaves and hard cones, also pose composting challenges. Black locust trees have an aggressive root system, produce messy fruits, and are prone to insect pests and diseases.

When choosing trees for your garden, consider these potential issues. Regular maintenance can help mitigate problems, but some trees may require more effort than others. Always research a tree's characteristics before planting to ensure it's the right fit for your garden.
