The National Ploughing Championships, held this year in Carlow, Ireland, has been a hub of excitement and competition. With over 225,000 visitors over three days, the event has proven to be a significant cultural and agricultural gathering.

One of the most anticipated events at this year's championships was the Brown Bread competition, organised by the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA). Maureen Igoe from Bonniconlon, Co. Mayo, emerged victorious, winning the title of best Brown Bread. Her winning recipe, which includes Guinness, treacle, and no milk, has been a family favourite for years.

Maureen's success in the competition earned her a coveted prize. Along with €5,000, she also received a Neff 'slide and hide' oven worth €2,000. Eight bakers made it to the semi-final, and four to the final, all first-time entrants.

Another notable event at the National Ploughing Championships was the recruitment drive by An Garda Siochana. Jim O'Callaghan and Justin Kelly launched this year's drive, which ends on October 9th. The recruitment campaign has seen increased efforts with high-profile sports stars such as Ronan Maher, a garda in Portlaoise and Tipperary captain, recommending the force to young people involved in high-level sport.

The National Ploughing Championships also featured the All-Ireland welly-throwing competition and fundraising efforts by Sosad Ireland. Last year, Sosad Ireland raised €8,000 at the event, with community donations being crucial for their cause, as stated by Shirley McKay.

Day three of the event saw a record-breaking 62,000 visitors, making it the busiest day of the championships. With its mix of competition, community, and culture, the National Ploughing Championships continues to be a significant event on Ireland's calendar.
