Celebration of Women's History Month Held by La Palma-Cerritos AAUW in March

The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is set to host a meeting on March 20, 2025, at the Cabrillo Lane Adult School Auditorium, Cerritos. The meeting will celebrate Women's History Month, and it is expected to feature several lesser-known women who have made significant contributions to American history.

Usually, the branch meets for General Meetings on the third Thursdays of the month, but members can join four different social groups, called Interest Groups. These groups include Cover to Cover, led by Thea Siegel; Great Decisions, led by Dorothy Edwards; Gourmet Group, led by Joan Flax; and Readers' Theater, led by Esther Aronson.

For this special event, Branch Secretary Christine Taxier will serve as Program Chair and present stories of these unsung women pioneers. Among the women likely to be featured are Bertlyn Bosley, Florence Rena Sabin, and Charlotte Cramer Sachs. These women have made notable achievements in public health nutrition, biological sciences, and entrepreneurship/invention respectively.

Other candidates for inclusion, based on broader recognition of unsung American women’s contributions, might include figures profiled by journalist Norah O'Donnell in her 2025 book We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America. This book celebrates women who played major roles in the country’s formation such as Mary Katharine Goddard and members of the Forten family involved in abolition and suffrage.

The Public Policy Committee of the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW is also hosting a Candidates Forum for City of Cerritos residents on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The forum will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Cerritos City Council Chamber at 18125 Bloomfield Avenue.

The goal of the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Members and guests are asked to bring a pen to write down information on activity sheets during the program.

The branch is open to all graduates who have an associate, baccalaureate, or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Interested individuals can contact Administrator Harriet Moses at 714-994-1487 to join the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the AAUW.

In addition, the branch is planning a Fall Fashion Show Fundraiser for Scholarships. More details about this event will be announced in due course. The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the AAUW hosted a Candidates Forum on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, and held an Annual Summer BBQ on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at Cerritos Park East from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
