CEOs Call for Urgent Action Against Plastic Pollution
rePurpose Global's CEO, Svanika Balasubramanian, and Earth Animal's CEO, Stewart Shanley, have both emphasized the urgent need for immediate action against plastic pollution in their respective industries. They highlight the importance of partnerships in tackling this global issue.
rePurpose Global, working with 230 brands across 26 countries, has successfully removed 14 million pounds of plastic from nature yearly. This is achieved through partnerships that finance the recovery of critical plastic waste in countries with high leakage rates. These collaborations not only help the environment but also create additional income streams for 4,594 waste workers and expand waste collection where infrastructure is limited.
In the pet food industry, 99% of packaging ends up in landfills or oceans. Earth Animal, a Plastic Neutral brand, is leading the charge. It has recovered 2,000 tons of plastic waste, equivalent to 111 million plastic bottles or 1 billion plastic bags. This includes efforts from 20 pet food brands from the US, Canada, and New Zealand. The Pet Sustainability Coalition identifies packaging pollution as one of the industry's greatest environmental challenges, making Earth Animal's initiative a significant step forward.
The pet food industry produces an estimated 300 million pounds of plastic waste annually in the US alone. With rePurpose Global's model, more brands can become plastic neutral, reducing the industry's environmental impact. These partnerships show that businesses can make a positive difference while also supporting local communities.
