Charitable Art Auction Held in Iðnó Today, Aiming to Aid Refugee Children
Gather 'Round for an Art Gallery Extravaganza!
Get ready, art lovers! Sat, Dec 17th, 2-4 PM, the art scene heats up in Iðnó for an auction supporting refugee children. Swing by, flip some bids, and groove to some tunes! This ain't just any art show - you'll find pieces by big-name artists right alongside works by little changemakers, itching to make a difference!
Meet Esther Þorvaldsdóttir, one of the movers and shakers behind the Rights for Refugee Children organization that got its start in 2019 right here in Iceland. This organization fights tooth and nail to ensure that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is respected by all state institutions, including the Directorate of Immigration, the National Hospital, and, unfortunately, often isn't.
"We focus on working with the Icelandic government to improve compliance with the CRC," says Esther. "Legal assistance for children refugees is a key part of our mission, as is dealing with cases that set precedents. If we come across a blatant rights violation, we're jumping in to help!" She emphasizes the need to draw attention to these issues and keep national officials informed and on-point when it comes to complying with the Child Rights Convention.
So far, over 60 children are on their list, and ensuring these young ones get the proper legal proceedings requires some serious dough.
A number of artists have shown their support by donating their masterpieces to the cause. Some of Iceland's best artists will have their works up for grabs at the auction, and you can expect some amazing tunes from Ásgeir Trausti and Sigríður Thorlacius! Artists who have donated their works include Guðjón Ketilsson, Marit Trönqvist, Hallgrímur Helgason, Þrándur Þórarinsson, Tinna Þorvalds, Annadóttir, Baldur Helgason, Þorvaldur Jónsson, and Mireja Samper, to name a few! The Flower Tapestry (Alter Tapestry) by Jón Sæmundur is just one example of the incredible art awaiting you at this event!
So, mark your calendars - this art auction is one for the books! Give refugee kids a fighting chance while feasting your eyes on some stunning artwork! 🚀🎨💪
