Collaboration between Jonathan Anderson and Wedgwood results in the unveiling of Lucie Rie designs
In a long-awaited collaboration, Wedgwood and JW Anderson have joined forces to bring Lucie Rie's iconic designs from 1964 to the modern world. Born in Austria, Lucie Rie established herself in London after fleeing Nazi Austria in 1938, and her work continues to challenge traditional notions of ceramics, as Emma Glynn, Wedgwood's creative director, attests.
The new collection features two sets - a teacup and saucer, and a coffee cup and saucer. The objects in the collection are shaped using a combination of machine and handwork, a process that involves fitting the pieces to a turning machine, followed by hand-shaping and ribbing. The unique technique used for the designs is called "slip trailing inlay", which is rarely used and considered difficult.
The collection is defined by Jasper blue surfaces with white graphic inlays, a testament to Rie's mastery of the 'sgraffito' technique in pottery. The proceeds from the collaboration will support the Lucie Rie and Hans Coper Foundation, which aims to provide long-term accessibility, digitization, and preservation of archival material. A grant scheme will also be established through the foundation to promote academic and creative scholarships.
Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of JW Anderson, is a collector of Lucie Rie's work and has long admired her innovative approach to ceramics. He believes that this collaboration honours Rie's legacy and her desire to push the boundaries of traditional ceramic techniques.
The collection will be available from selected stores in China, Japan, the US, the UK, Wedgwood.com, JW Anderson locations in London, Milan, Tokyo, and online at JWAnderson.com starting from 19 September 2025. This collaboration marks a significant moment in the history of both Wedgwood and JW Anderson, and promises to bring Lucie Rie's timeless designs to a new generation of ceramic enthusiasts.
