Companies Mondi and Ekornes transition to cardboard packaging for their mattresses instead of plastic.

In a move that underscores the growing focus on packaging sustainability, particularly among top brands, Ekornes and Mondi have partnered to introduce an environmentally friendly packaging solution for high-end mattresses. The new packaging, a breaking news in the mattress industry, offers several advantages. It consists of two components: compress wrapping and secondary packaging. The compress wrapping, made from Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5, ensures durability and vacuum sealing during the compression process, ensuring the mattress remains protected during transport. The secondary packaging securely holds the compressed and rolled mattress, wrapped in Mondi's re/cycle CompressWrap, within an outer wrapper made from Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce. The collaboration between Mondi and Ekornes not only meets Ekornes' technical requirements but also contributes towards a circular economy. Ola Forsberg, Industry Group Manager Foaming Papers at Mondi, stated that the partnership underscores their commitment to working together to address industry-specific challenges. Ekornes is passionate about delivering sustainable high-end mattresses with this new partnership. The new mattress packaging allows consumers to unwrap the mattress without the need for a knife or cutter, aiming to ensure a safer unwrapping experience. The partnership replaces a previous plastic solution, aligning with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in 2025, a comprehensive guide on the subject. Global packaging sustainability regulation in 2025 is another area of focus, and this collaboration demonstrates a step towards meeting those regulations. Moreover, the packaging solution is designed for recycling according to the 4evergreen 'Design for Circularity Guidelines'. The key to increasing the use of reusable packaging in supermarkets is an important consideration, and this solution is a step in that direction. Ola Forsberg, who coordinated the partnership, stated that the collaboration with Ekornes underscores their commitment to working together to address industry-specific challenges. The outer wrapper offers excellent sealing properties, making it an ideal solution for the mattress industry. This partnership is a significant stride in the mattress industry's journey towards sustainability, setting a precedent for other brands to follow. Ekornes and Mondi's commitment to a circular economy is commendable and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the environment.
