Construction of new Bladensburg Bus Depot successfully concludes, recognized by WMATA
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has completed a significant milestone with the unveiling of its new Bladensburg Bus Garage. This state-of-the-art facility, designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, marks a new era in WMATA's ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure and deliver a more reliable bus service.
Sustainability and environmental design have been at the forefront of the garage's construction, with the incorporation of solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system for bus washing. These features aim to reduce the facility's carbon footprint and conserve potable water, respectively. The target for LEED Platinum certification underscores WMATA's commitment to green building practices and sustainable operations.
Operational and maintenance capacity has also been significantly enhanced. The garage boasts 31 maintenance bays, a body shop, and paint booth, ensuring that buses can be serviced and repaired efficiently, reducing downtime. A new compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel yard and four dedicated bus fueling lanes have been included to support cleaner alternative fuels for the fleet. Additionally, a multi-level parking structure capable of accommodating up to 292 buses is under construction, along with dedicated parking for employees. Future phases will see separate entrances for buses and staff to improve traffic flow.
Employee well-being has not been overlooked. The facility includes a dedicated employee wellness center, modern office spaces, and support infrastructure. Upgraded perimeter security, lighting, and landscaping contribute to a safer, more pleasant environment for both employees and the surrounding community.
Valerie Santos, WMATA Board Chair, considers the new Bladensburg Bus Garage a symbol of progress, sustainability, and WMATA's commitment to service. The consolidation of three outdated buildings into a single, modern facility reflects WMATA’s investment in infrastructure that matches the needs of a contemporary transit system.
The new garage is expected to deliver more reliable bus service to customers in the District and parts of Maryland by enabling more efficient fleet maintenance and operations.
