Crossborder Citizens' Involvement in the Eurodistrict SaarMoselle Showcased at Saarbrücker City Hall Exhibition
In the heart of Saarbrücken, the St. Johann Town Hall is hosting an exhibition that underscores the commitment to fostering cooperation and finding joint solutions across borders. This exhibition is part of the "Common Ground SaarMoselle" project, a groundbreaking initiative that has been hailed as a pioneering model for cross-border democratic participation in Europe.
Funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation from 2022 to 2025, the "Common Ground SaarMoselle" project brings together citizens, local authorities, and organizations from the Saarland region in Germany and the Moselle region in France. The aim is to promote regional development and mutual understanding by engaging in shared cultural and social projects.
Saarbrücken's Mayor, Uwe Conradt, emphasizes the significance of this project for the region, stating that it allows for the inclusion of perspectives from people across borders. Over the course of a year, members of the Citizens' Council have been working on questions of cooperation in the Eurodistrict SaarMoselle, utilizing personal experiences and concrete suggestions from cross-border daily life in their work.
The results of the Citizens' Council's work are documented in a report available online at [www.saarbruecken.de/abschluss_common_ground]. The report outlines a series of improvement suggestions aimed at enhancing life in the German-French border region.
The exhibition in the town hall showcases the innovative approach to citizen involvement and the pioneering model for cross-border democratic participation that the "Common Ground SaarMoselle" project represents. It offers visitors an opportunity to form their own opinions about the impulses of the citizens involved in the project.
The success of the "Common Ground SaarMoselle" project does not end with this exhibition. A second phase of the project is planned to start in early 2026, once again supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation. The Eurodistrict SaarMoselle will take over project management for the "Common Ground SaarMoselle" in the future, ensuring the project's continued impact on the German-French border region.
