Artist Lucile Viaud Tells Tales of Shifting Territories Through Glass Creations

Nestled in the heart of Côtes-d'Armor, in the old pigsty of Le Bois-Tison, Lucile Viaud's workshop exudes warmth and a connection to nature. For a decade, this 30-year-old glass artist has been crafting pieces that echo the landscapes she admires, particularly the coastal environments that inspire her.

The workshop, with its large wooden beams cutting through the roof, is bathed in sunlight that dances off the glass creations. Nature, Lucile says, surrounds her here, sometimes making it challenging to focus. Yet, it is this very connection to the environment that infuses her work with authenticity.

Lucile chose glass as her medium, believing it to be a symbolic substance, the first synthetic material created by humans. She sees glass as inscribed in countless landscapes, from forest glassworks to island glassworks, and her art reflects this belief.

Her work is a testament to the enduring skill of glassmaking, a craft that has been etched into the land since ancient times. Lucile's pieces tell stories of shifting territories, capturing the textures and colours found in the coastal environments that she loves.

In her Evran workshop, Lucile blends artistic vision with scientific collaboration. She works closely with the Institute of Chemical Sciences in Rennes, experimenting and innovating with her glass materials. This partnership allows her to push the boundaries of traditional glass art, creating pieces that are as much research-driven as they are creative.

The process behind her art is meticulous and patient. Hand-blowing and careful shaping are likely part of her craft, as she seeks to capture the essence of the landscapes that inspire her. The result is a series of delicate, refined glass pieces that evoke natural forms and the interplay of light and materials.

In essence, Lucile Viaud's glass art is a beautiful fusion of inspiration, location, and method, telling a unique story about the natural world and the human connection to it.
