Designers Engaged for a £2.5m Overhaul of Glasgow's Pipe Factory

The historic pipe factory in Glasgow's Barras area, last used for its original purpose in 1955, is being transformed into a vibrant community facility. Since 2015, the building has been hosting exhibitions, events, and artists' studios, but its new incarnation will serve as a creative hub and office space for small businesses.

This significant project is a key part of the continued regeneration of the Barras area. The renovation work includes repairing the building's fabric and features, installing insulation, a low-carbon heating system, and overhauling the services. The aim is to make the B-listed building fully accessible and improve energy efficiency.

O'DonellBrown, a Scotland-based architectural practice, has been chosen to manage the conversion project ahead of Simpson & Brown Architects, Hoskins Architects, and Collective Architecture. The selection is seen as a great honour by the practice, who consider the Pipe Factory project as embodying all that is good about retrofit schemes.

Local practice Loader Monteith will serve as conservation architect on the project. The facility will offer a 'creative hub', office space for small businesses, and flexible, accessible public space. The Pipe Factory project presents an opportunity for O'DonellBrown to deliver an exemplar scheme for future similar retrofit projects.

The regeneration scheme is intended to support young people, the local community, artists, architects, and designers in the early stages of their careers. It is expected to help small businesses during difficult financial times and contribute to environmental efforts in Glasgow.

The Pipe Factory project aims to provide a template for future retrofit projects that focus on energy efficiency and accessibility. Upon completion, the facility will be dedicated to aspiring small businesses, further boosting the local economy and providing a much-needed boost to the creative sector.

The renovation work on the building will also contribute to environmental efforts, with a focus on sustainable practices and reducing the carbon footprint of the facility. This aligns with Glasgow's commitment to becoming a net-zero city by 2030.

The Pipe Factory project is a testament to the potential of regeneration schemes and the transformative power of architecture. As the work progresses, the once dilapidated factory will rise once more, a beacon of creativity and innovation in the heart of Glasgow.
