Durham University Launches National Geothermal Centre Aiming for Net Zero by 2035

Durham University, a global leader in sustainability, has launched the National Geothermal Centre. This initiative, in collaboration with industry players like Vercana GmbH and Odfjell Technology, aims to accelerate research and innovation in geothermal energy. The university, which was named a finalist in the Green Gown Awards, is committed to achieving net zero carbon footprint by 2035 and a biodiversity net gain by 2032.

Durham's campus, a diverse habitat featuring woodland, grassland, and wetland, is home to various wildlife including roe deer, badgers, and over 100 bird species. The university is rewilding some areas to further encourage this biodiversity. It has also won platinum status in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Awards, reflecting its dedication to preserving local ecosystems.

The university's Botanic Garden is open to the public, hosting educational events like school visits and storytelling sessions. Durham is internationally recognised for addressing environmental challenges, ranking 19th globally in the QS Sustainability Rankings. Currently, an international team co-led by Durham is studying the Greenland ice sheet aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Durham University, through initiatives like the National Geothermal Centre and its commitment to rewilding, is at the forefront of environmental sustainability. Its efforts to achieve net zero carbon footprint and biodiversity net gain, along with its educational outreach, demonstrate a holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
