Eisenhüttenstadt aims for a re-election in 2026
In the heart of Brandenburg, Germany, Eisenhüttenstadt—once a bustling centre of East German steel production—is now gaining international interest due to its innovative "Probewohnen" action. This unique initiative, aimed at combating population decline and a shortage of skilled workers, has attracted over 2,000 applications, many from abroad.
Seventy-five years ago, Eisenhüttenstadt was built as a DDR model settlement. However, its population has dwindled, with the city currently housing around 24,000 inhabitants, a far cry from its former population of over 50,000.
The "Probewohnen" project, set to continue in 2026, has already seen success. IT consultant Melanie Griffith from Bremen and documentary filmmaker Jonas Brander from Berlin spent two weeks living in Eisenhüttenstadt as trial residents. The project leader, Basan, has declared the trial a success.
During their stay, both Melanie and Jonas appreciated the cleanliness and the convenience of the short distances in Eisenhüttenstadt. However, they found the city to be quite quiet at times. Despite the short duration of their stay, they expressed interest in visiting Eisenhüttenstadt more often in the future.
Three rental contracts have already been signed with people who became aware of the city through the campaign and want to move there. One of the two tenants who will live in Eisenhüttenstadt starting in 2026 is Melanie Martinez herself. Jonas Brander is also among the eager new residents.
Eisenhüttenstadt's transformation did not stop at the "Probewohnen" project. In 2011, actor Tom Hanks visited the city, a former socialist model city in the GDR. More recently, it served as a film set for Germany's largest area monument.
Other communities in Brandenburg, such as Guben and Eberswalde, have also offered free trial living, indicating a growing trend towards revitalising declining towns. As the "Probewohnen" project continues, Eisenhüttenstadt is poised to attract more residents and regain its former vibrancy.
