Elberfeld's "Kabäusken": wine and collectible bottles, promoted for communal benefit
In a refreshing shift, the cherished Kabaeusken, known for its vibrant scene of encounters, inclusivity, and sustainable trading, has found new management under the stewardship of Utopiastadt. Since June 1st, these forward-thinkers have been breathing fresh life into this one-of-a-kind location, taking over from Tafel Wuppertal after a collaborative setup phase with Agere and Figan Sarikaya.
Tafel Wuppertal had to relinquish control due to mounting financial and personnel pressures brought about by cuts in the social sector. As Zulfu Polat, the Managing Director of Tafel Wuppertal, put it, "The Kabaeusken was a labor of love, but we must prioritize our core mission - providing food for the needy - in these challenging times." Nevertheless, they're thrilled to see the Kabaeusken continuing its journey under Utopiastadt's wing.
Far from simply taking over sponsorship, Utopiastadt and Figan Sarikaya plan to build on the existing concept. Their vision includes providing space for local manufacturers who lack city center real estate, giving self-employed individuals a platform to showcase their products, and hosting an array of events, such as wine tastings, readings, exhibitions, and even workshops. As Sarikaya said, "Anyone can come to us, and we’ll see if their idea fits our concept."
True to its origins, the Kabaeusken's social, sustainable, and welcoming spirit endures. Beate Blaschczok, Founder and Managing Director of "Utopiastadt gGmbH", aptly summarized, "We're essentially facilitating a type of trade that's still uncommon but brings immense joy - it's like a treasure hunt for characterful and heartfelt items."
Despite the recent transformations, the grand re-opening party today marks a new beginning. Adorned with music from two DJs, food from the Tafel truck, wine tastings courtesy of GEPA, and vegan pralines from the Bernsteinzimmer manufactory, it's an invitation for one and all. "Come and mingle," Figan Sarikaya extends the invitation. "Let's pen a fresh chapter together, demonstrating how trade can be meaningful, social, and local."
While the Kabaeusken has evolved, sustainable trade practices and local events remain at its heart. It's a fascinating example of how community-driven initiatives can foster sustainable economic growth and build stronger communities. As Utopiastadt starts this new chapter, they're poised to further define what community-focused, sustainable trade can look like.
- Under the management of Utopiastadt, the Kabaeusken will now offer space for small-business owners dealing with home-and-garden, lifestyle, and small-business products, expanding the scope of shopping options within the venue.
- In addition to hosting events like wine tastings, readings, and exhibitions, the refreshed Kabaeusken will also provide workshop opportunities, serving as a hub for entrepreneurs and artisans to showcase their creations and collaborate.
- By engaging in sustainable trading practices, such as collaborating with local manufacturers, the Kabaeusken aims to contribute to the local economy while fostering community connections and enriching the lifestyle experiences of its visitors.
