How We Evaluated

Our French press fiesta started with first impressions: What's included in the packaging, is it easy to assemble, and do you need instructions to operate it? Once the preliminaries were out of the way, it was TIME for the main event: brewing the coffee! Using each device's full capacity, we standardized the ratio to one tablespoon per liter of water and brewed for exactly four minutes. Stability, tightness, and pourability were put to the test, alongside cleaning ease.

amazon.de For around 42 euros, the Poliviar French press is almost twice as expensive. However, the 793-gram machine is a real eye-catcher: The matt green color of the stainless steel pot looks very modern, and the wooden handle gives it a natural look and makes it comfortable to hold.

The Crown Goes to...

Groenenberg French Press 0.35 to 1 Liter (€43.99) stole the show. Packing a punch at under 44 euros, it came equipped with an additional replacement filter. Plus, it's the heaviest device in our lineup, tipping the scales at 979 grams, making it feel sturdy and high-quality. Robust construction was yet another major win, with the pot and lid made of stainless steel and an internal measuring scale. Its double insulation ensured coffee stays toasty for up to ten minutes. The handheld feel, stable press mechanism, and tight-fitting lid were further selling points. A minor water spill when pouring at an angle was our only complaint.

Tchibo French Press 800 ml (€19.99) was our budget-minded contender. For only around 20 euros, it offered a modern matte green stainless steel pot, coupled with a natural-looking wooden handle. The glass and stainless-steel frame kept it heat-resistant while still getting warm during brewing. Aside from a harder-to-press plunger and a slightly loose lid, it mimicked the quality of pricier models, but with a tendency to pour slightly sideways.

Poliviar 7379 French Press 1 Liter (€41.99) was an attractive and almost twice as expensive model. Its modern matt green stainless steel pot and wooden handle impressed with an elegant design. The device, which came with filters, fit comfortably and measured the water level. However, the lid didn't sit as tightly as pricier models, and coffee grounds sometimes found their way into the cup. A plus was its double-walled insulation and suitable-for-the-dishwasher frame (except for the lid).

AeroPress 298 ml (€38.94) offered a unique spin on the French press. Assembling this device required instructions to prevent overflowing. Made of BPA-free plastic, it included a measuring spoon and stirrer. Although limited to one cup, its compact design was handy for on-the-go junkies. The lack of sediment was a perk, and the cleanup took only one minute and 15 seconds. Replacement parts were easily available.

Finally, the Bodum Caffettiera 1 Liter (€23.94) entered the arena with a classic look, remaining true to its ’70s design. Composed of borosilicate glass and a chrome-plated stainless steel frame, the device was both stylish and robust. A measuring spoon accompanied the package. Although the scale was absent, the transparent glass carafe allowed clear visibility during brewing. The lid, however, sat loosely, and some water spilled when pouring at an angle. Cleaning was a breeze, with all parts dishwasher safe (excluding the glass carafe for longevity purposes).

So there you have it, folks! Whether you’re a budget-conscious enthusiast or a coffee connoisseur, there's a French press that'll brew perfection for your unique caffeine cravings. And remember, in the cafe of life, the French press is your trusty barista!

amazon.de For around 39 euros, consumers can get the AeroPress. This device differs significantly from the other models in our test, both in appearance and in direct usability. Unlike the other devices, the AeroPress first needs to be assembled. An instruction manual can be accessed via a QR code, which should be done as we quickly found out in the test. Otherwise, there's a risk of the cup overflowing.
