Enjoying a Respite from the Heat: Humans, Crops, and Livestock Benefitting from July's Lower Temperatures
In the heart of California, the usually scorching July heatwave has taken a welcome break this year, with temperatures in Central California lingering in the 80s. This refreshing change, according to Action News AM Live Meteorologist Christine Gregory, is more unusual as we get into late July.
For the region's farmers, this cooler weather is a welcome respite, as high temperatures over 102 degrees can cause plants to start shutting down, as explained by Ryan Jacobsen, the Agricultural Director at the Fresno County Farm Bureau. This year, the area has experienced only six days in triple digits, a significant drop compared to last July's 27 days.
Jacobsen believes that the cooler conditions are beneficial for cherries and other crops, as they slow down the maturation process, reducing water stress on the plants. However, he also notes that the bloom period of cherries was okay, but was based on the damage done by late heat waves. This suggests that while the cooler weather is helpful, it may not have entirely offset the initial impact of the warmer temperatures.
The cooler weather is also bringing a boost to local golf courses, such as Madera Municipal Golf Course, where golfers like Larry Casado and Martin Bison are enjoying the opportunity to play. Casado, who enjoys playing golf when the temperature is 80 to 90 degrees, is hopeful for a low golf score that matches the current weather. Bison, on the other hand, is relishing the chance to make the most of the milder conditions on the green.
However, it's not just the golfers and farmers who are appreciating the cooler weather. Livestock, too, are feeling more comfortable in the current temperatures, as stated by Jacobsen. In addition to misters and fans, the cooler weather reduces heat stress on the animals, improving their comfort and reducing their water needs.

Homeowners in California's Central region, currently experiencing 80s temperatures instead of usual July heatwaves, are looking forward to the improved 'lifestyle' that comes with cooler weather. Local golf courses, such as Madera Municipal Golf Course, are also benefiting from the change in 'weather', offering golfers like Larry Casado and Martin Bison a more enjoyable 'home-and-garden' experience on the green.
