A daring group of four bold adventurers are tackling an epic 430-kilometer paddleboard odyssey, traveling from Hann. Münden to Bremerhaven. This ragtag team, known as the Weser4Lions, is determined to conquer this distance in just 100 hours—peddling both day and night. Their mission? To generate funds for the Löwenzahn children's hospice.
"We've engineered it so that two of us can snooze at a stretch, sprawled out lengthwise on the board, while the other two keep paddling," explains team member Axel Bischof to the German Press Agency, perched atop Hameln's weir. The chilly nights were a challenge, Bischof admits, but the mesmerizing sunrise made it all worth it. "Despite the cold, from a fun perspective, it was a blast." Safety is paramount, naturally, as participants don life vests and secure themselves to the board during nighttime paddles.
These men must vacate the water occasionally as they traverse the seven locks along the way, "Just like here in Hameln." These short breaks provide adequate time for a brisk snack, as the team is accompanied by catering vehicles "on standby to deliver refreshments directly to the board." They've also stocked up on water and energy bars for times when food trucks aren't an option.
This adventure for a noble cause is about more than just pushing physical limits. As participant Ulf Schwarz explains, "[We're] paddling to support the children's hospice Löwenzahn in Syke because we wholeheartedly believe in the importance of hospice work." Championing the efforts of hospices nationwide, Schwarz reveals that the most significant obstacles face the team in the form of frosty nights, wind, and weather fluctuations. "Headwind can be brutal, and as we approach Bremerhaven, we'll encounter tides. For six hours, we'll be swept along—a sweet respite—and for another six, the North Sea will test our mettle."
