Exploration of business opportunities in Pakistan's coastal harbors by American representatives
In a significant development, a US delegation, led by Jennifer Littlejohn, recently visited Pakistan to discuss investment opportunities in the country's maritime sector. The meetings took place with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
The delegation was briefed on the infrastructure and investment prospects of three key ports: Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadar.
Karachi Port, which handles 54 percent of Pakistan's trade and boasts an annual capacity of 125 million tons, has been making strides. The port recently improved its global ranking to 61st among 405 container ports. It operates three private container terminals, one private bulk terminal, three liquid cargo berths, and 13 dry cargo berths. Karachi Port also handled Pakistan's largest vessel measuring 400 meters.
The US delegation expressed interest in LNG terminals, bulk cargo handling, and investment prospects across all three ports.
Gwadar Port, another strategic port, was highlighted for its special economic zones and tourism potential. Details about its recent improvements in the global ranking were not provided.
At Port Qasim, ongoing projects include dredging of navigation channels, dualization of a 26-kilometer access road, development of effluent treatment plants, and an alternate route for cargo movement. Planned projects include a coastal economic zone, two LNG terminals on a build-operate-transfer basis, multipurpose cargo terminals, an integrated container terminal, and a second oil terminal with storage facilities. However, no specific capacity or ranking details were mentioned for Port Qasim or Gwadar Port in this paragraph.
The US side considers Pakistan's maritime sector strategically significant for trade and economic growth. No specific information about a signed MoU between Pakistan and the US was provided in the discussions.
The meetings marked a step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and exploring mutual benefits in the maritime sector. The US delegation's visit underscores the growing interest of international partners in Pakistan's economic growth and development.
