Exploring Dormagen's Landmarks: From the Rhine Tower to the Underground Shelters

On Sunday, September 14, Dormagen will be opening its doors to the public for the nationwide "Day of Open Heritage." This event, themed "Worthwhile: Priceless or Irreplaceable?", will offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore 16 historical sites and over 25 individual actions across the city.

The event kicks off at 10 am at the Rheinturm (Rheinstraße 1) in Zons, a landmark of Dormagen that has been vacant for more than 20 years. Following the opening ceremony, the Rheinturm will reopen, and guided tours will be available. To book a tour, visit www.tinyurl.com/tourrheinturm.

In addition to the Rheinturm, other sites that will be open to the public include the Bunker Memorial Site in the Raphaelshaus, the historic Friedestrom castle, the district museum, the Rheintorkapelle, the windmill, and the air raid shelter at the Feldtor. A tour through the Zonser Heath will be led by Jost Auler, Peter Bruns, and Volker Kuhlmann about the rediscovery of the imperial-Bavarian military camp from 1642.

The city administration is participating in the event, and numerous monument owners and volunteers are making local offerings possible. Visitors can engage in conversations and questions with the new honorary commissioner for monument preservation in Dormagen, Michael Zacharias, on Mühlenstraße in the old part of Zons at 5:00 PM. Gerd Bock, the new honorary monument preservation officer, will offer a consultation from 12 to 2 pm under the chestnut tree on the Mühlenstraße in the Zonser old town.

Participation in all events is free, and guided tours of the Rheinturm are limited to 20 people each, starting every full hour from 12 pm. For more information about the event, visit www.ourwebsite/heritageday. We look forward to seeing you there!
