Gardener Triumphs Over Paddy Power in £1m Court Victory

In a staggering turn of events, a gardener from Gloucestershire bagged a hefty payout of £1m ($1.3m) from a Flutter-owned sportsbook, after a court ruling determined she was owed much more.

Courts say it's a 'monster win'

As reported on Wednesday, Judge Ritchie ordered Paddy Power, an associate of FanDuel's UK sportsbook, to fork over the big bucks. The ruling came after the UK High Court declared that Corrinne Durber had actually won a 'monster jackpot', rather than the daily prize that Paddy Power attempted to award her.

Rather than the £20,265 ($26,136) they initially tried to pay, the Flutter-owned subsidiary has been ordered to cough up the hefty sum. Paddy Power argued that a glitch in one of their online casino games pointed to the wrong prize.

winning big without a fight

Durber's breach of contract case against Paddy Power was won shortly without a trial, as per reports from the BBC. The triumph came when Justice Ritchie granted Durber a summary judgment.

On October 2020, while playing a game on Paddy Power's iCasino, Durber's tablet screen displayed she had won a whopping £1m bonanza. Two years later, her patience has finally paid off, as much to the delight of Durber and her lawyer.

truth in advertising

In his ruling, Judge Ritchie emphasized the "what you see is what you get" principle. He stated that players expect onscreen visuals to be accurate and correct, likening it to betting on a roulette wheel in a land-based casino. If the ball lands on a specific number, players expect to receive the corresponding payout.

Unethical business practices

Ritchie deemed it unethical for operators to shirk their responsibilities in cases of recklessness, negligence, errors, inadequate digital services, or inadequate testing, passing the buck to customers.

Celebrating justice

Pictured outside the courts, a jubilant Durber raised a champagne glass alongside her lawyer, expressing relief and satisfaction in receiving her rightful winnings. Durber plans to use the sum to care for her children and enjoy her retirement.

funny how things turn out

Despite the victory, Durber couldn't help but ask why Paddy Power didn't simply pay up straight away, rather than dragging her through a lengthy legal battle. Durber vowed never to place another bet with the bookmaker and warned others to exercise caution as well.

In a statement, Flutter acknowledged the unfortunate incident and stated they are reviewing the judgment.

The UK High Court ruling in favor of Corrinne Durber, a gardener from Gloucestershire, has set a precedent for truth in advertising in home-and-garden sectors such as iCasinos, noting that visuals on screen should accurately reflect the intended prize. Durber, now a millionaire, will use her winnings to improve her lifestyle, possibly including gardening endeavors around her home.
