Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB): A Hub for International Literature

The Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB), established in 1963, is a renowned literary institution that fosters literary exchange, supports writers, and promotes contemporary literature. Located in a villa on Großer Wannsee, the LCB offers a variety of events, including workshops, readings, festivals, and digital offerings, to create a vibrant space for authors, translators, critics, and other literary professionals.

The LCB's mission is to promote literature and support it behind the scenes. It strives to create a diverse literary community and help integrate non-German literature and voices into its public programs and publications. Florian Höllerer serves as the director, while Thorsten Dönges is the literary programme curator.

For English-speaking readers, the LCB offers a dedicated series of events throughout the year, and its online portals feature pieces in the original language and English translations, such as Vietnamese or Kurdish works. The LCB's website and platforms like VOOO and LCB Diplomatique are particularly appealing for English speakers.

The LCB continues to experiment with new formats for its events, such as 'Casino', which involves smaller groups and moving from stage to stage for more interactive discussions. This format was introduced to encourage more intimate and engaging conversations between attendees and speakers.

Upcoming events at the LCB include the James Baldwin festival in September and a queer literature festival in August, with some events in English. For the most accurate and updated schedule of events, including those in English, consulting LCB’s official website or social media platforms is recommended.

In addition, the LCB hosts individual events and series in English, such as the recent event with Adania Shibli and Arnon Grünberg. The LCB has also started offering its ateliers as working space for Berlin writers.

Last year, the LCB celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of fostering literary exchange and promoting contemporary literature. The LCB remains a vital part of Berlin's literary landscape and a hub for international literature.
