Munich Strives to Counteract Unfriendly Reputation

A small, yet significant gesture - a simple "Good morning" - could help shift Munich's perceived image. This is the aim of the "Say: Good morning!" initiative, launched recently in response to a survey ranking Munich as one of the least friendly cities in the world.

The survey, conducted by the online community Internations, polled its members on hospitality and warmth in cities worldwide. The results placed four German cities in the top ten of the least friendly cities globally, with Munich emerging as the frontrunner. However, it's important to note that Munich's reputation as a friendly or unfriendly city is not strongly supported by most major quality-of-life and happiness rankings (Happy Cities Index, 2025).

Despite these findings, the organizers of "Say: Good morning!" believe the ranking can be improved. The action encourages participants to greet strangers, from bus drivers to school crossing guards, aiming to demonstrate the power of a friendly word.

The initiative has gained traction, with co-hosts Larissa, Tobi, and Susanne leading the charge on their radio show on 95.5. The campaign seeks to engage both long-term residents and newcomers alike, encouraging everyone to make a positive difference.

Although Munich may not always top "friendliness" rankings, it is generally well-regarded for its high quality of life, excellent job market, and exceptional safety (Expat surveys). With the power to change the city's image lies in the hands of its residents and visitors.

"Challenge accepted?" say the organizers of "Say: Good morning!" as they encourage Munich's citizens to unite and showcase the city's warmth and hospitality. Up for the challenge? Join in and spread the message, "Good morning, Munich!"
