Guide to Bike Cleansing: A Step-by-Step Approach to Keeping Your Bike Sparkling Clean
In the spirit of our special focus on tips, tricks, and inspiration for new riders (running from March 10 to March 17), we present a comprehensive guide to cleaning your bike.
Maintaining the cleanliness of your bike is crucial for its condition and performance. When it comes to cleaning, there are six broad categories of equipment you'll need: brushes, cleaning fluid, degreaser, lube, towel, and a bucket.
For the frame, a bike cleaning product and a soft-bristled brush are ideal. In the case of disc brakes, it's essential to use a suitable cleaning product to avoid damage. A dedicated degreaser is often necessary to cut through chain grime.
When it comes to lubes, dry lubes are best for dry conditions and repel dust, while wet lubes are more resistant to being washed off in wet conditions but tend to collect dust in dry conditions.
Cleaning your bike's braking surface and pads should be a regular practice, regardless of the braking system used. After cleaning, the frame should be rinsed, the chain dried, and chain lube applied.
A microfibre cleaning cloth is the best tool for drying a bike after cleaning, as they don't leave lint. A chain cleaner can be used to clean the chain more effectively. However, using a pressure washer or hose to clean a bike is not recommended due to potential damage.
Investing in higher quality brushes can make them last longer. Specialist brushes can make the job of cleaning a bike easier, especially when cleaning hard-to-reach areas.
Some bike cleaners can double as degreasers in their undiluted form. It's important to check if a bike cleaning product is safe to use on disc brakes, and there are bike degreasers specifically formulated to minimize ecological impact.
Bike cleaning bundles are available from brands such as Muc-Off, Bike Hut, or Weldtite and include everything needed to clean a bike in one package.
By following these tips, you'll ensure your bike stays in top condition and performs at its best. Happy riding!
