Jewelry returns to Villa Bergfried: Saalfeld's landmark now open for public

Villa Bergfried, a historic building complex in Saalfeld, has reopened its doors after a two-year renovation, as reported on THÜRINGEN JOURNAL on August 14, 2025, at 19:00. The renovation, which cost approximately 2.9 million euros, was supported by funding from the federal states' building program and the city.

The representative halls of the villa can now be rented privately for family celebrations, weddings, and other events. The courtyard and the economic building have also been renovated, with the facade, windows, doors, and ornaments restored in a historically accurate manner.

However, concerns have been raised about the post-renovation sanitation process. Despite extensive renovation work, many of the 70 interior rooms of Villa Bergfried remain unsanitized. This poses potential health risks to occupants and visitors, undermining the purpose of the renovation.

The reasons for the delay in sanitization could include incomplete cleaning protocols, resource constraints, oversight or mismanagement, or health and safety precautions. To address these issues, it is crucial for the villa’s management or responsible authorities to conduct a rapid assessment, allocate necessary resources and personnel, implement strict quality control and verification, and communicate transparently with staff and visitors about the measures being taken to safeguard health.

Meanwhile, Villa Bergfried will be open to the public for the first time since renovation during the Heritage Day in September. The Bismarckturm in Rudolstadt, another significant landmark, is currently accessible after a long construction phase but is not yet fully restored.

Interestingly, Bergfried Park in Saalfeld is one of the 25 external locations for the Federal Garden Show 2021 in Erfurt. Elsewhere, the Preilipper Kuppe in Oberpreilipp, which was destroyed during World War II, has been rebuilt by volunteers.

The renovation of Villa Bergfried is a milestone, according to Matthias Graul, the chairman of the "Friends of Bergfried" association. The association also played a part in restoring the chandeliers in the ground-floor halls with donations. As the villa transitions into its new role as an event venue, addressing the sanitation concerns will ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all who visit.
