Kitty saved from predicament on Alaskan Railway: "She's a determined survivor"

Portia Duke, a tour guide on the Alaska Railroad, has recently rescued a kitten named Willow, who was found on the train tracks over the weekend. The story of this little survivor continues to develop, with updates likely available on the GoFundMe page Duke has set up to help cover Willow's vet costs.

Willow, who weighs half a pound and is approximately 3-4 weeks old, is currently playing with cat toys in safety. Duke shared that Willow is tenacious and a little fighter, a true survivor. The kitten, who was found within 10 yards of the previous location, 18 hours later, is doing well and becoming playful, according to Duke.

To help Willow continue to thrive, Duke has been choosing the right toys to stimulate her natural hunting instincts, encourage exercise, and provide mental engagement. Some top-recommended cat toys for kittens like Willow include interactive track toys, game and electronic toys, DIY toys, and tunnels and hideouts.

Interactive track toys such as the Petstages Tower of Tracks Cat Toy and the Catit Design Senses Speed Circuit keep kittens entertained and encourage natural stalking and batting behaviors. Game and electronic toys like various battery-powered toys mimic prey, which can be very exciting for kittens with high prey drives. DIY toys, such as crumpled paper balls, cardboard boxes, or dangly string toys, are simple, affordable, and just as fun as store-bought ones. Tunnels and hideouts like Frisco's 47-inch foldable crinkle play tunnel and the Hartz Just For Cats peek & play pop-up cat tent provide hiding spots and encourage playful interactions.

When choosing toys for Willow, it's essential to consider interactive and engaging options, ensure all parts are non-toxic and size-appropriate, and rotate toys to keep playtime interesting and prevent boredom.

The vet discovered that Willow needs dewormer and antibiotics, and has minor tail issues. Duke is aiming to raise money for the vet care that Willow needs, and the GoFundMe can be found for those who wish to learn more about her story or contribute.

Duke drove out with her boyfriend the next morning in search of the kitten. She heard the kitten crying over the noise of the train and was hopeful that the kitten would still be there for a "one-in-a-million shot" at rescue. When the train stopped to switch engine crew, Duke was able to safely rescue Willow.

Willow's story continues to develop, with updates likely available on the GoFundMe page. For those interested in helping, consider donating or sharing her story to help ensure Willow receives the care she needs to continue thriving.
