Launch of a Recreational Site Focused on COVID-19 Issues
In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a new interactive website has been developed in New Zealand to provide clear and consistent guidance on personal outdoor recreation. The website, covid19outdoors.nz, was created by the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC), in partnership with Water Safety NZ and Recreation Aotearoa, and has the support of over 30 national organisations.
The MSC Chief Executive, Mike Daisley, stated that the organisation identified the need to provide activity-specific guidance due to the pandemic. To achieve this, teams from the MSC and Water Safety NZ worked with sector organisations to turn Government guidance into activity-specific guidance for the website.
The website offers clear guidance as to whether a particular activity is permitted and if there are any restrictions or important considerations. It allows users to select their location and pick from a wide-ranging list of recreational activities, which currently covers 61 different land and water-based personal outdoor activities. The activity-specific content of the website has been developed by applying the Government's detailed Alert level framework to the context of each activity.
Water Safety New Zealand believes having all activities in one central location is ideal, and the website's design allows for the guidance to be tailored to different regions throughout the country. This means that if different parts of the country are in different Alert Levels at the same time, the information provided on the website will be relevant, consistent, and accurate.
The website is a valuable resource for all New Zealanders, according to Recreation Aotearoa. It serves as a tool developed to help people make informed decisions about their personal outdoor recreation activities during the pandemic. Sport NZ provides Government policy guidance for the website.
The CEO of the Mountain Safety Council (New Zealand), Mike Daisley, expressed that the website was created in response to Kiwis proving during the Level 4 lockdown that they are united against COVID-19. The website was designed to ensure that Kiwis know what is and isn't acceptable forms of personal outdoor recreation as they move through the Alert Levels.
Access the website at covid19outdoors.nz to make informed decisions about your personal outdoor recreation activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
