Flagler Beach Lifeguards Rescue Struggling Deer from Atlantic Ocean

On a rainy Sunday in 2024, lifeguards Chase Hunter and Leo Peters at Flagler Beach, Florida, found themselves in an unusual situation when they encountered a young white-tailed deer swimming struggling in the Atlantic Ocean.

The heavy rain and rough surf made the rescue effort challenging, but the duo paddled out about 300 yards offshore near the Flagler Beach Pier. Using a rescue board, they managed to secure the deer and brought it safely back to shore with the assistance of a firefighter.

The rescue attracted national attention and was considered a notable event. Captain Joe Armellino and Flagler Beach Fire Rescue also assisted in the operation, guiding the deer safely across Florida State Road A1A to a wooded area where it was later released.

Two sharks were observed swimming around the deer during the rescue, but the lifeguards were able to focus on the task at hand. The rescue was reportedly the first of its kind in the fire chief’s 15 years of service.

In recognition of their efforts, the Flagler Beach Fire Department and Ocean Rescue were honoured by PETA with Compassionate Fire Department and Compassionate Action Awards.

Chase paddled out on a board and wrestled the deer into his arms, while Leo swam out to assist in bringing the deer back to shore. Both lifeguards expressed their satisfaction with their achievement during interviews with Orlando's Fox affiliate.

Chase stated that they save lives, regardless of whether it's a human or an animal, like the deer in this case. The lifeguards at Flagler Beach continue to be recognised for their roles in ensuring safety at the beach, and their efforts to help those in distress, whether human or animal, are a testament to their dedication.

In 2024, the lifeguards at Flagler Beach reported the rescue of 241 people and 1800 preventative actions. Despite the challenges they face, they remain the unsung heroes of summer fun at the beach.

The lifeguards at Flagler Beach, having already saved 241 people in 2024, demonstrated their dedication to all forms of life when they rescued a struggling deer from the outdoor-living environment of the Atlantic Ocean. After safely returning the deer to the home-and-garden of a wooded area, they continued to ensure the well-being of beachgoers, making it a place where both lifestyle and outdoor-living can be enjoyed harmoniously.
