Living in a Material World: 5 Ways Our Lives Reflect a Focus on Art and Possessions
Art, Fashion, and Culture Converge at Longwood Gardens
The Material World art, fashion, and culture festival is taking place at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania from September 20 to November 2, 2025. The festival, which can be found in the September 17, 2025 edition of the platform magazine, offers a unique blend of art, fashion, and environmental consciousness.
In the Conservatory, visitors can admire the work of artist Nnenna Okore, who has created an installation featuring wing-like shapes made from organic cotton, hessian, and cheesecloth that float above the plants. Meanwhile, designer Lottie Delamain has created a garden featuring plants used in sustainable fashion, such as cotton and indigo, with waste from fast-fashion textiles bordering the beds.
The festival also showcases the work of young designers from the College Board, who are presenting sustainable collections made from plant material. From sea-weed trousers to garments dyed with nettle, these innovative designs offer a glimpse into the future of fashion.
Artists Michael McMillan and Camilla are also featured at the festival. McMillan has created audio installations exploring the history and environmental impact of cotton, while Camilla, a former student at the Royal College of Art, returned to painting after the death of her husband. Her work, which is currently on display at Messum's, London SW1 until October 3, focuses on the theme of femininity and the 'female gaze on females'.
Rose Hilton, another former student of the Royal College of Art, had a prolific career as a painter. After marrying Abstract artist Roger Hilton, she stopped painting to bring up her family. However, following his death, she returned to painting and considered it her reason for living. David Messum Fine Art is currently holding a sale of Rose Hilton's work, featuring both abstract and figurative pieces.
Carla Passino, the Arts & Antiques editor for the platform, has curated the festival's content. She has previously covered heritage, conservation, history, and property stories. Some copies of the September 17, 2025 edition of the platform magazine suffered from a printing error that affected page 124, where the full articles from the festival are reproduced.
The festival also celebrates the work of worldwide artisans using plant fibres, as showcased by Fashion Nova. A textile dye map of Longwood Gardens has been created through embroidery and printing, offering a beautiful and sustainable way to explore the gardens.
For those interested in attending the Material World festival, tickets can be purchased on the festival's website, www.longwoodgardens.org. The festival promises to be an unforgettable experience, showcasing the best of art, fashion, and sustainability.
