Rockin' the Castle: Meissen's Centennial Bash Unveiled!

Meissen's Burgfestspiele Marks Anniversary Celebration - Medieval-themed jamborees at the castles

Mark your calendars, folks! The once-in-a-century bash at the majestic Meissen Castle is hitting the century mark in 2025, and it promises to be one hell of a party! Here's a lowdown on what you can expect.

"It all started a century ago," says Holger May, the project head from the city, who's taking the reins for the first time. After a city council decision, the castle festival will now be a bi-annual event under their watch. The festivities are planned from June 14 to 22, with nine events lined up.

The opening night on Saturday will be a explosive, experimental affair, featuring Philipp Hochmair, the Salzburg Jedermann star, and his band Die Elektrohand Gottes. They're geared up to blow your socks off with a storm in the courtyard of the Albrechtsburg! The following day will see the staging of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream in Sächsisch," starring Tom Pauls and the Elbland Philharmonic. Both nights are officially sold out, according to May.

Don't sweat it if you missed out on the opening nights. There's still plenty to look forward to! Andrej Hermlin and his swing orchestra, singer-songwriter Dota & Band, and The Firebirds are on the lineup, ready to rock the historic site high above the Elbe - the nearly 1,100-year-old Albrechtsburg, Germany's oldest castle. The Zwinger Trio will make it triply thrilling, while Burgfräulein Bo & the Ritter Rost Band will serve up a Brass Pop and Scrap Rock extravaganza for one night, as per May.

The festival's rich history, unfortunately, has seen some gaps since its inception in 1925. However, local theater makers revived the castle courtyard plays in 2008 and 2009, and the successful premiere of a "Jedermann" new production in 2016 gave hope for regularity. After another break due to COVID-19, the festival is back, and it's all thanks to the city stepping in to manage it!

So, grab your tickets and get ready to party at the Meissen Castle Festival! It's going to be a rockin' good time!
