Memorial Day in Hanover, Germany, 2025
On September 11th at 11:00 AM, the city of Hannover will participate in the nationwide warning day, a joint action day by the federal government, states, and municipalities held annually in late September. This year, the test warning will be sent under the leadership of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) and will include a new addition to Hannover's warning system: a comprehensive siren warning network.
Over the past two years, the state capital of Hannover has built this network, now consisting of 112 sirens strategically placed throughout the city. These sirens, which fill a gap in the warning mix with their wake-up function and independence from mobile networks, emit a rising and falling tone lasting one minute, almost inaudible but effective in creating a warning and wake-up effect.
Dr. Axel von der Ohe, Hannover's first mayor and head of finance, public order, and fire department, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive mix of warning means in the city. Hannover offers a wide range of warning methods, including cell broadcast, warning apps, loudspeaker vehicles, internet warning channels, radio and television, and digital city information boards.
The siren warning network in Hannover is managed by the Fire Department Hannover, whose official website, https://www.feuerwehr-hannover.de, provides more information about the system. For press inquiries, please contact Christine Reime at the Fire Department Hannover, whose contact information can be found at [email protected].
Last year, 80 of the 112 sirens in Hannover were tested, and this year, the test will also include cell broadcasting, which directly addresses mobile phones. The all-clear will be given at 11:45 AM, including a one-minute continuous tone from the siren warning network.
For more information about the nationwide warning day, please visit the BBK's website at https://www.bbk.bund.de/DE/Warnung-Vorsorge/Bundesweiter-Warntag/bundesweiter-warntag_node.html. A flyer on the topic is available in ten different languages.
The newly built sirens in Hannover enable quick, location-independent, and network-independent warning of the population. Sirens in Hannover, with their unique wake-up function, are an important addition to the city's comprehensive warning system, ensuring the safety and preparedness of its residents during emergencies.
