Movie Theater Event: "Tunnel Cinema" at Schlossberg's Municipal Cinema on the 20th
Celebrating 20 Years of the Unique Tunnel Cinema in Pforzheim
Nestled in the heart of Pforzheim, the communal cinema at Schlossberg is marking its 20th anniversary with a series of special events. Located in a 400-meter long tunnel, the "tunnel cinema" offers a unique cinematic experience that combines local history with contemporary arts.
Access to the tunnel cinema is via the Dietlinger street, leading to the West tangent towards the Wilferdinger height. The cinema hall is reached through the north portal of the tunnel, which was constructed in 2023.
The mission of the communal cinema is to make the world of cinema accessible to all. For the anniversary celebrations, invited guests will be treated to two historical silent films, "The Journey to the Moon" and "There it is", with live-scoring on site. The film "Safety Last! Just the Skyscraper" from 1923 will also be live-scored by the duo Eberhard Budziat, Werner Küspert, and Dietmar Fuhr.
The tunnel cinema is an official construction site, and visitors are coordinated for security reasons by the trumpeter Eberhard Budziat. The acoustics in the tunnel cinema have a reverberation of 20 seconds, making sound reproduction difficult. However, this challenges only add to the unique atmosphere of the cinema.
Mayor Sibylle Schuessler is a member of the support association of the communal cinema. The cinema has moved locations over the years, from the Golden Anchor to the Jaeger passage before settling at the Schlossberg. It is also considered the most expensive.
The communal cinema at Schlossberg may be the longest cinema in the world. Despite extensive searches, there is limited information available on the history or significance of the tunnel cinema. Local archives, cultural heritage organisations, or the city’s tourism office may provide more extensive information for those seeking detailed historical records.
The tunnel cinema continues its anniversary celebrations on Saturday with the film "The Little Mole" at 4 p.m. and the film "Safety Last! Just the Skyscraper" at 7 p.m. Sylvia M. Felder, the government president, has congratulated those responsible for the communal cinema, recognising its unique contribution to the cultural landscape of Pforzheim.
