"Here's to our sea mother, rich and bounteous, a toast at Narali Purnima"

Let's chat about my ocean conservation journey and the astonishing festival that gave it depth: Narali Purnima with the spirited Koli community based in Mumbai, India. This shindig's all about honoring the big blue beauty, Varuna, the ruler of the seas!

Growing up, my seaside shenanigans boiled down to a straightforward roadmap: cut the rubbish, save the sea creatures, and tread lightly. But witnessing Narali Purnima added some colors I never knew were missing.

Over every vermilion-hued sari worn, each boat adorned with marigolds and coconuts, there's an aarti (prayer) session for our beloved sea deity, Varuna, asking for his blessings upon the waters. As those tender coconuts gracefully glide off the waves, they signify both the wistful past season and the hope for a promising future catch. And you can feel the entire community reverberating with a solemn yet joyful consciousness, knowing they're not just taking from the sea, but exchanging, returning, and acknowledging the extraordinary generosity of the Ocean.

But it's not just about the vibrant spectacle that unfolds; the timeline's smart, too! For yonks, the Kolis have abstained from fishing during monsoons, letting fish populations multiply untouched. It's a time-honored tradition of sustainability, way ahead of the modern conservation movement's curve.

Deep down, Narali Purnima's about harmoniously coexisting with the ocean. As I watched this tradition unfold, it struck me that ocean preservation ain't just about drawing boundaries and establishing strategies—it's about embracing a mindset of mutual respect. The Kolis don't see their lives as detached from the sea; instead, they recognize their lives are intertwined with its currents.

This moment revolutionized my understanding of conservation. It's a lesson in humility, in remembering the wisdom encapsulated in those time-honored traditions. It's a reminder that taking care of our sea mother isn't just our responsibility; it's a lifelong bond of respect and gratitude.

In every shimmering offering the Kolis make, they remind us that conservation is more than an act; it's a tender bond of appreciation and promise to care for the ocean's endless bounty. And as I continue my ocean-saving crusade, I carry this heartfelt lesson with me. #ConservationMadeMealive 🌊💙
