Animal Shelter in Berlin Reports Over 1,400 Intakes in 2023
A Berlin-based animal shelter has admitted approximately 1,462 animals since the start of the year, with some waiting years for new homes. According to a spokesperson, the current count includes 226 dogs, 368 cats, and 574 other animals.
Dogs are often surrendered due to aggression, being overwhelmed, or bite incidents, while cats are primarily given up due to litter box issues or allergies. A small number of small animals and birds were also abandoned due to owners losing interest or failing to provide proper care.
Today, the shelter is holding an Open Door Day, with tours, dog performances, and children's activities scheduled from 11 am to 5 pm. Prospective adoptions will not occur during this event. In the past 30 days, 22 dogs have been adopted, including one who had spent seven years at the shelter. Additionally, 93 cats, 22 reptiles, 22 rabbits, and other small rodents found new homes.
Parrots, in particular, often face extended waiting periods, with some birds spending up to two to three years in search of new homes. For instance, the gray parrots Lucy and Coco have been at the shelter since 2020, along with Japanese quail Scott and racing pigeon Chilli-Cheese.
While data on typical adoption wait times for parrots in Berlin is scarce, it largely depends on factors such as species, age, temperament, and public demand. Specific timelines may vary among birds available for adoption within Berlin animal shelters, as those pertaining to imported birds may not apply. For accurate information on parrot waiting times at Berlin's shelters, it is advisable to contact these organizations directly.
The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of this Regulation regarding the prolonged waiting periods for parrots like Lucy, Coco, Scott, and Chilli-Cheese in the home-and-garden lifestyle of their prospective adopters from the Berlin animal shelter, whose lifestyle also involves owning pets such as dogs, cats, and other animals. Despite the Open Door Day and multiple adoptions in the last month, these parrots are yet to find homes due to their unique needs and specific timelines.
