You're bound to stumble upon Nvidia GeForce RTX melted 12VHPWR connectors while browsing PC hardware social media. Although Nvidia has made efforts to address this issue, it's still a problem for some users. But fear not, Asus reckons it has a foolproof solution, as demonstrated in a video on Bilibili.

In the video, hosted by Tony Yu, the general manager of Asus' China division, they showcase the BTF (Back to the Future) design handling over 1,300 W of power without getting close to the melting point. Last year, Asus lent me a bunch of BTF products to play around with, and I must say, I was seriously impressed.

The BTF design rethinks the power delivery connector design and materials to handle high power more efficiently. BTF graphics cards forgo standard power cables, including the troublesome 12VHPWR system, in favor of a sleek slot-like connector that looks similar to a tiny PCIe connector. The latest BTF 2.5 design now incorporates a robust dongle that allows switching between a normal power connector and the Asus slot.

In the demonstration, they crank up the power flow through the BTF connector on a dummy PCB to over 650 W, which is almost the maximum draw for GeForce RTX 5090 cards. Amazingly, the connector reaches a maximum temperature of 35°C. Then they really push the limits, drawing over 1,300 W, and the connector stays under 40°C. After that, buttons are pressed, dials are twiddled, and the power consumption is ramped to 1,900 W. Still, the connector temperature only rises to just over 40°C. It's safe to say that this connector is sturdy as hell.

However, it's essential to note that one still needs to use a 12VHPWR cable, or multiple 8-pin PCIe cables, between the BTF motherboard and the power supply unit. The Asus power slot is actually wired to a 12VHPWR socket on the rear of the board, so it's not like the design fully bypasses Nvidia's troublesome connector.

In the maximum power test, the cables between the PSU (in this case, two PSUs) and the motherboard reach 70°C, which is high but not catastrophic. The purpose of the demonstration was to show that everything works fine under normal conditions.

The brilliance of Asus' BTF tech could well be the future of desktop PC layouts, particularly for supplying power to graphics cards. However, few other vendors are exploring this technology, and while the BTF 2.5 dongle solves the problem of using a BTF graphics card in a non-BTF motherboard, it adds an extra complication and cost that PC gamers may not wish to pay for.

But if you make the jump and use a good quality PCIe 5.1 power supply, ensuring that its 12VHPWR cable is firmly plugged into the supply and BTF motherboard, you should be able to kiss any RTX meltgate fears goodbye.
