Preparing for International Children's Day Worldwide
In the heart of Wiesbaden, the city's playgrounds are a cherished math playground for children. A diligent team of workers ensures that these spaces remain safe, clean, and well-maintained, thanks to the efforts of the Environmental, Waste, and Parks Department (ELW) and the Green Space Office.
Every three months, the playground control team carries out an operational inspection according to DIN 1176, checking the functionality of playground equipment. Minor repairs are made immediately during these inspections, such as replacing swing seats, tightening screws, or sanding down split wooden beams. All playground equipment was found to be functional during the latest inspection.
Defective components found during inspections are repaired in the workshop of the Green Space Office. The office's employees also check the condition of the playgrounds once a week, shoveling sand back into play areas, raking leaves, and collecting shards.
The ELW, in collaboration with the "Clean Hessen" action, has put up posters on 11 popular playgrounds in Wiesbaden, aiming to raise awareness about litter on playgrounds. The posters depict various items of litter found on playgrounds, including cigarette butts, glass shards, bottle caps, syringes, used condoms, and dog poop. The ELW emphasises the importance of using waste bins instead of throwing trash on the ground.
The ELW has been responsible for the cleanliness of Wiesbaden's playgrounds since 2020. In 2024, they spent 350,000 euros on playground repairs and 635,000 euros on replacement purchases. The following year, they planned replacement purchases of 995,000 euros, with some already implemented, such as the play ship Eleonorenanlage, the new playground equipment on Warmer Damm, the play tower on Hauptstraße, and the carousel at Kochbrunnenplatz.
The ELW cleans the 157 Wiesbaden playgrounds at regular intervals, with some being cleaned up to five times a week. The cleaning operation usually takes about 25 minutes and is done with tongs to pick up litter. On Thursday, for instance, the playground on Brunhildestraße is scheduled for cleaning, marking the second time this week.
For any questions or concerns, citizens can contact the responsible department or office. The Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden, located at Schlossplatz 6, 65183 Wiesbaden, can be reached at www.wiesbaden.de/pressereferat.
Boubakar Azzaoui, who leads the playground cleaning team at the ELW, states that they find these items when cleaning playgrounds. The ELW and their colleagues from the Parks Department work together to maintain the cleanliness and safety of playgrounds throughout the year, not just around World Children's Day. With their commitment and diligence, the children of Wiesbaden can enjoy a clean, safe, and well-maintained office 365 environment to play and grow.
