Transforming a Small Space: A Rustic Industrial Kitchenette Makeover

A small, outdated kitchenette has been given a fresh new look, thanks to a thoughtful makeover that prioritizes both function and aesthetics. The kitchenette now boasts a Rustic Industrial design, complete with dark inset cabinets, wood accents, mixed metals, and industrial appliances.

At the heart of the makeover is a rolling kitchen cart, equipped with a double burner, providing versatile cooking and storage options. A vent hood with a charcoal filter has been added for comfort during cooking. The rolling island offers extra storage and can be moved to function as an island when needed, without taking up too much space.

Functional storage solutions have been cleverly incorporated into the design. Industrial-style open shelving units, made of solid wood and black iron pipe fittings, offer deep shelves for pots, pans, appliances, and pantry items while adding a farmhouse-industrial aesthetic.

Rustic kitchen islands or carts, crafted from reclaimed or distressed wood, often with metal accents and wheels for mobility, provide additional countertop space plus shelves, drawers, or cabinets for versatile storage. Slimline vertical storage has been integrated into small kitchen islands or standalone units, ideal for organizing baking sheets and cutting boards in a compact footprint.

Baker's racks with open shelves and cabinets combine rustic wood finishes and metal frames for storing kitchenware, microwave, coffee supplies, and decorative items. Pull-out drawers and pantry systems with adjustable shelves and door-mounted racks have been installed to maximize space inside cabinets and pantry closets for sorted food storage and small appliances.

Multi-functional furniture elements, such as kitchen islands with sliding barn doors or two-tiered counters that separate cooking prep and casual dining while concealing storage in a stylish way, add versatility to the kitchenette's layout.

The cabinets, despite not being perfect, have exceeded expectations in quality. The design of the kitchenette does not include upper cabinets, creating an open feel similar to the downstairs kitchen. Ikea rails were used for the cabinets in the kitchenette.

A smaller single bowl sink was installed, providing enough room for washing dishes. The sink features a faucet that resembles a coffee shop faucet, adding to the industrial aesthetic. Some items from the downstairs kitchen were used in the kitchenette due to preparation for a 2-week road trip.

A Draper Large Decorative Bench has been used in the dining nook of the kitchenette, offering seating and versatility. The bench is made of leather or faux leather, adding texture and warmth. The wall with the fridge in the kitchenette is not yet completed, but will feature organizational features.

The One Room Challenge, a demanding project especially for a room needing a total gut job, such as the upstairs kitchenette, has been successfully completed. The kitchenette makeover has resulted in a cozy, clean look that seamlessly blends functionality with rustic industrial design.

The rustic industrial design of the kitchenette, featuring functional open shelving units and a rolling kitchen cart, aligns well with a home-and-garden lifestyle, offering a blend of aesthetics and practicality. The addition of a smaller single bowl sink and a Draper Large Decorative Bench in the dining nook contributes to the overall home-and-garden atmosphere, making the space perfect for culinary adventures and casual dining.
