Risky Swimming in Lake Weißensee: Potential Perils for Adventurers

In the heart of Berlin, the Left faction is making a significant push to address the growing demand for affordable and easily accessible bathing spots near the White Lake. The lake, known as the most deadly in the city's capital, has seen 16 bathing deaths since 2005, with the latest occurring in August of this year.

Katrin Seidel, a member of the Left Party (Die Linke) in Pankow, is spearheading the campaign for a second free and public bathing place at Weißer See. She aims to provide a safe cooling-off opportunity for many Pankow residents, including low-income families, single parents, and children, who are currently denied access due to the cost of the day pass.

The only official bathing spot on the White Lake is a paid one, and it only offers a short swim from 6 PM onwards. A day pass at the White Lake costs 9.50 euros, and after 6 PM, it's 6 euros. The Left faction proposes offering short-term bathing as a more affordable tariff and suggesting reducing day and evening tariffs for those affected by poverty to a more socially acceptable level.

However, beyond the official beach, it is a protected green area where the regulations of the Berlin Green Area Act apply. The Left faction is urging the district office to enable timely implementation of the second bathing spot. The district office mentions that a wading pool is regularly opened in early June for children to play and cool off near the lake.

Measures are being taken to ensure more safety in the future, including regular controls by the public order office, the use of parking wardens, and improved signage around the lake. The responsible district councilor, Manuela Anders-Granitzki (CDU), stated that bathing in the lake is generally prohibited and only allowed in the designated area of the beach.

The Left Party Pankow is advocating for a second, low-threshold, and publicly usable bathing spot at the White Lake. They believe that this second spot would contribute to social justice and provide an important offer for health prevention and cooling. Repair work, including securing the heavily eroded shoreline, is to begin soon, and access to the water will be made more difficult to emphasize the bathing ban.

As of now, no information has been provided about any plans or actions taken by the district office regarding the creation of a second, free, and public bathing spot. The Left faction is taking it upon itself to maintain pressure on the district office regarding this issue.
