River Mainz's definitive strategies revealed for Rhine area

The city of Bonaduz has announced its plans for the second phase of the Rhine embankment redesign, with the proposal set to be voted on by the city council on August 25, 2025. The project, costing an estimated 20 million euros, focuses on a 700-meter stretch from an underground garage on the Rhine to the customs harbor.

The plan is divided into three parts. The first area will feature a beach volleyball court and a calisthenics park with sports equipment. The second part of the renovation will introduce large lawn areas, seating steps, and Rhine balconies over the river. Approximately 2,000 square meters will be de-sealed on the Rhine embankment section, and about 90 new trees will be added as part of the renovation.

New concrete walls facing Kaiserstraße will provide a canvas for the local street art scene. The sports and meadow facilities at the Kaisertor and the landscaping are currently budgeted at 17 million euros. The estimated cost for the entire second construction phase is 20 million euros.

Mayor Nino Haase expressed his pleasure about the inclusion of a volleyball court in the plan. He also supports the creation of more green spaces, aligning with the Environment and Transport Commissioner, Janina Steinkrüger's, desire for creating green spaces in those areas.

The city is in good talks with the state regarding the funding for the project. The funding for the renovation depends on financial support from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the third area, a large playground and a garden are planned, with the exact details yet to be determined. The skate park will be expanded, and the basketball court will be improved. The discussion about the removal of parking spaces at Kaiser Tor and Taunusstraße will take place in the mobility committee.

The site for the Ferris wheel near the Kaisertor will be unsealed and converted into an Active Park, with the construction work scheduled to begin in 2027. The plan for the third area of the Rhine embankment renovation focuses on play and community facilities.

Mayor Haase also expressed his support for the creation of these facilities, further emphasising the city's commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents. The renovation plan is a significant step towards making Bonaduz a greener, more vibrant, and more active city.
