Each Manor House: A Story Awaits
Juliane Kruse, a notable manor house enthusiast and marketer of the MittsommerRemise 2025, shares her passion. "Each manor house has its own captivating story," she says. With a background in managing popular manor house blogs like "Historical Houses," Kruse knows the rich history behind Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's manor houses intimately. Most of the preserved houses date back to the 19th century, built in classicism or historicism, with around 30 dating to the 16th century and sporting Baroque architectural influences. Over a thousand of these grand estates have been designated as historical monuments.
Private Ownership and Renovation
Manor houses were once the symbolic centers of agricultural estates, surrounded by farm buildings, gardens, or parks, shaping local culture. After reunification, around 90% of these houses fell into private hands, undergoing renovation in recent years. Many of these renovated manor houses have found new life as tourist destinations.
A Festival of Activities
Participating manor houses will once again offer a wealth of experiences, as reported by Claudia Schaffhausen from the Schloss-, Guts- und Herrenhäuser MV association. These can include guided tours, sound experiences, exhibitions, and culinary delights. A list of the participating manor houses from seven regions of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, along with their daily programs, can be found here.
Twelve houses are joining the festivities for the first time:- The Renaissance water castle Spantekow near Anklam- The Schlosshotel Ralswiek on Rügen- The Schloss Rattey near Neubrandenburg, recently known for its thriving wine estate
New Adventures: Bus Tours and Outdoor Exploration
This year, the bus tour offer has been expanded, enabling guests to travel between manor houses using tickets from Rostock, Wismar, Schwerin, Neubrandenburg, and Greifswald. Guests can also explore the region by bike or foot in certain areas.
For Claudia Schaffhausen, the MittsommerRemise is a testament to the enduring history of manor houses in the Baltic Sea region and a peek into the vibrant future of these historic estates under the care of dedicated individuals.
Tickets for the event cost 14 Euros for a day pass, 25 Euros for a weekend pass. Students and children pay half price. Tickets may be a bit more expensive when purchased directly from manor houses: 15 Euros for a day pass, 30 Euros for a weekend pass.
In a Nutshell: The Manor House
Once the representative centers of agricultural estates, manor houses often featured farm buildings, gardens, or parks and were owned by nobility who enjoyed tax privileges. These privileges ended with the advent of democracy. Manor houses in the east were significantly impacted during and after World War II, with many being destroyed or nationalized. Following 1989, a new transformation began, and today, around 90% of Mecklenburg's manor houses are privately owned, often used for tourism.
Embrace the history and beauty of manor houses as you explore their home-and-garden settings during the MittsommerRemise festival. Immerse yourself in the unique lifestyle each manor house offers, with its own captivating story waiting to be discovered.
