"Sheep rearing in Altmühltal featuring wool production and a crafts trading hub"
The picturesque town of Kipfenberg, nestled in the heart of the Altmühltal Nature Park, will host the 20th annual Altmühltal Lamb Drive on the last weekend of September 2025. This family-friendly event, organised by the Press Office/Tourist Information Kipfenberg, promises a delightful mix of tradition and modern craftsmanship.
The event is a continuation of the "Altmühltal Lamb" project, which has been active for over 20 years. This project ensures high-quality meat for consumers while also preserving the unique juniper heaths of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The project is known for providing new job opportunities for shepherds and helping to prevent the loss of rare plants like the gentian in the park.
The lamb drive will commence at the Böhming Old Mill Bridge on both days, September 27 and 28, 2025. The herd will be welcomed by Mayor Christian Wagner at the beginning of the drive. The lambs will then be driven to winter pastures in Böhming for the 20th time.
In addition to the lamb drive, a large wool and craft market will take place along Wirtsstraße from 10:00 to 18:00 both days. Over 50 stalls and booths will showcase a variety of crafts, including demonstrations of felting, spinning, and other techniques. Sheep shearing and herding dog demonstrations, informative lectures and tours about nature, interactive activities for children, a bouncy castle, and a hot air balloon distance competition are also part of the event program.
Local restaurants and associations will offer delicacies from Altmühltal lamb and other culinary delights throughout the event. A wagon ride past meadows and apple trees with the typical juniper bushes of the Altmühltal in the background is also included in the event.
The guest of honour on Saturday, September 27, 2025, will be Mr. Alexander Flierl, chairman of the Committee on Environment and Consumer Protection in the Bavarian State Parliament. Bernhard Pfaller will take photos for the event, capturing the essence of this traditional Altmühltal event for posterity.
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience the charm of the Altmühltal Nature Park and support the local community. Mark your calendars for the 27th and 28th of September 2025, and join us in Kipfenberg, Böhming, for a weekend filled with tradition, craftsmanship, and delicious food.
