Berlin Animal Shelter Reports 1,462 Animal Intakes So Far This Year

The Berlin Animal Shelter has admitted a total of 1,462 animals since the beginning of the year, according to recent reports. Some animals have found new homes within a few months, while others have waited for years.

As of May 22, the facility hosts 226 dogs and 368 cats, making a total of 1,170 animals residing there. The majority of the dogs have been surrendered due to aggression, behavioral issues, or bite incidents, while cats are often relinquished due to litter box issues or allergies. Small animals and birds have been surrendered due to lack of interest or insufficient care.

The shelter invites the public to attend the Open House Day scheduled for May 22, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The event includes guided tours, dog shows, and entertainment programs for children, as well as featuring shelter dogs for presentation. No consultations or adoptions will occur during the event.

In the past month, 22 dogs have been adopted, including one that had been at the shelter for seven years. Ninety-three cats, twenty-two reptiles, and twenty-two rabbits and other rodents also found new homes during the same period.

Parrots tend to wait the longest for new homes, with the average duration being approximately three months. However, some parrots can wait up to two or three years. Grey parrots Lucy and Coco, and Japanese quail Scott have been at the shelter since 2020, while racing pigeon Chilli-Cheese has been there for an extended period.

Regarding parrot adoption wait times, it is challenging to find specific data for Berlin-based shelters. Shelter timelines for different species, ages, and temperaments can vary significantly. For parrots, with potentially more complex care requirements and less frequent adoption rates, the wait for a new home may range from weeks to several months.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of the pet Regulation, as individuals continue to invest in various lifestyle choices, such as home-and-garden improvements to create comfortable environments for their new furry friends. Meanwhile, a few of the long-waiting parrots at the Berlin Animal Shelter, including Lucy, Coco, and Scott, are still yearning for their forever homes despite having been there since 2020.
