"Show courage, be fearless."
In a groundbreaking move, German drugstore chain Rossmann has introduced a new wine product packaged in a cardboard bottle. This innovative packaging, dubbed the Frugal Bottle, is a significant step towards sustainable packaging in the wine industry.
The Frugal Bottle, made of an inner plastic tube and an outer paper shell, consists of 94% recycled cardboard. Weighing approximately 82 grams, it is five times lighter than traditional glass bottles, reducing CO2 emissions associated with transportation.
This cardboard bottle, designed for larger quantities of wine (specifically five or ten liters), is shatterproof and can be easily disposed of in the paper container or yellow bin after consumption. The bottle's design aligns well with Germany's efficient, color-coded recycling system, facilitating widespread household recycling without requiring special processing.
Rossmann's Frugal Bottle has notably reduced CO2 emissions by 84% compared to traditional glass bottles. This reduction in carbon footprint is a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions related to packaging.
The new wine packaging, available in over 2,200 Rossmann stores across Germany, marks a major step toward mainstream sustainable packaging in the wine industry. It encourages shifts away from traditional glass bottles, setting an example for the wine trade and retail sectors in Germany and beyond.
Rossmann's Category Manager Wine, Solveig Grohne, explained that it took courage to fill high-quality German wine into the new packaging. The white Burgundy for the pilot project comes from the winery cooperative Achkarren in Baden, a long-standing partner of Rossmann.
This new wine packaging is an absolute novelty in Germany, and details about it can be found on Rossmann's website. Rossmann is proud to offer this wine innovation together with their long-standing partner from the Kaiserstuhl.
In addition to the redesign of their branches to show more emotions, Rossmann's introduction of the Frugal Bottle demonstrates a landmark advance in sustainable packaging, substantially lowering carbon emissions and streamlining recycling processes.
